Large-scale production and harvesting of microalgae
Microalgae farming is a promising method to biological fixation of CO2 in the atmosphere and produce food and medicines. They can be a good source for feedstock for animals and biofuel production. They have high photosynthetic efficiency and contain high levels of lipid content. The commercial production of microalgae suffers from high cost due to difficulties in the harvesting process from dilute suspension. It is a challenging task due to their small sizes (on the order of 30-50 microns) and their density is nearly similar to that of water. We are developing fast and efficient harvesting technology to reduce harvesting cost from 3000kW/ton to 250kW/ton of biomass.
